The Pinnacle of Japanese Spirit
— Kamakura-Bori Hanko

KAMAKURA SIGNET — Hand-Carved Kamakura-Bori Hanko by a Master Engraver
Kamakura-Bori Hanko — born of 800 years of Zen and the samurai.
This is the finest seal Japan can make. Not simply carved, but sculpted, lacquered, and polished over nearly six months — then engraved with your name by a master of the highest national rank. Only 36 are made each year. To hold one is to hold the weight of Japanese history in the palm of your hand.

The Land of the Samurai and the Stillness of Zen
Kamakura is not just an ancient capital. Eight hundred years ago, it became the spiritual heart of Japan — the place where the discipline of the samurai and the stillness of Zen first came together. That meeting shaped a whole way of seeing beauty: strong yet quiet, powerful yet restrained.
The Kamakura-Bori Hanko is the purest expression of that spirit. It is not a tool for signing. It is a small masterpiece that carries the weight of history and the calm of Zen — made in the very place where both were born.

The Guri Pattern: Carving Eternity
The flowing scrolls and curling clouds cut into every piece are the Guri pattern — the signature of Kamakura-Bori. It is far more than decoration. Because the lines never break, the Guri pattern has long stood for eternal prosperity, unbroken energy, and lasting good fortune. Run your fingers across its deep grooves and you feel the rhythm of 800 years of Japanese history, alive under your hand — a meaning that makes it as powerful a gift as it is a possession.
Six Months to Perfection: The Art of Patience
A true masterpiece cannot be hurried. A single Kamakura-Bori Hanko takes nearly six months to complete. First the Guri pattern is carved into the wood entirely by hand. Then natural Urushi (Japanese lacquer) is applied, dried, and polished — layer upon layer, over many weeks — until it reaches a deep, glowing surface no machine can ever produce. When you know the months of patience inside a single piece, its price is no longer a question. It is simply what a work made this way costs.

Only 36 a Year. Crowned with Japan's Highest Honor.
Because each piece demands nearly six months of work, we can make only 36 in a year — available exclusively from our atelier. This is not a stock item waiting on a shelf. It is carved when it is reserved, and once the year's pieces are spoken for, they are gone. To hold one is to hold something almost no one else in the world will ever own.
A Masterpiece That Outlives You
Most seals are made to be used. This one is made to be inherited. Carved over six months, finished in lacquer, awarded the nation's highest honor, and made just 36 times a year — a Kamakura-Bori Hanko is not bought so much as entrusted to you, to be passed to those who follow.
